The minute your nose lingers over a glass of Raveneau’s 2008 Chablis Les Clos you recognize that this wine inhabits its own world, representing a separate class in the current collection. The chalky and oceanic mineral elements; ripeness of northerly orchard fruits; mouth-watering citrus; and bittersweet floral profusion found in other outstanding representatives of its vintage are here exponentially elevated. Richly-textured yet persistently refreshing; palpably dense yet vibratory; the reverberative finishing intensity of this Clos needs to be measured on the Richter scale. It grips, invigorates, and won’t let go. But beg it to leave you alone for at least a few years before it starts taking possession. To the extent that there are still 20 year white Burgundies – and I’m convinced that there are – here is a most likely candidate.
