The 2020 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru is much more forthcoming on the nose than some of its peers. It's well-defined and vigorous, with powdered chalk, white fruit and walnut scents. But everything is very nicely focused. The palate is balanced and smooth with a slightly honeyed texture. It is very assured, although it needs a little more mineralité towards the finish. Otherwise, this has real class. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
There is a suggestion of the exotic lurking in the background of the aromas of poached apple, acacia and spiced tea. I very much like the texture to the nicely dense medium-bodied flavors that possess a noticeably finer mouthfeel if not the same power on the bone-dry, stylish and impressively persistent finale. This also offer very fine quality in an ageworthy package.
Showing a little reduction on the nose but less on the smoky side, attractively multi-layered, opening out rather more broadly while the oak supports the white fruit. This has the classic rounded aspect of Meursault without any of the old-style butter and hazelnuts, but instead with the finely tuned nuances of Genevrières. If anything, the wine gained in harmony in the glass. 13.5% alcohol. Drink from 2025-2030.
