The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru les Caillerets consists of a single barrel this year, since Boillot's holding includes young vines that will augment the 0.08-hectare from 2016, doubling the quantity to two barrels. It has a gorgeous bouquet, bridled with joyful red cherry, cranberry jus and quince aromas that seem to soar from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and was showing a marked oak influence at the moment (I tasted from a 2010 barrel, though it was fermented in new), though that will be sucked up by the copious fruit that provides impressive depth on the sinewy finish. Give this 4-5 years in bottle (if you manage to locate a bottle).
?As it usually is this is the best of the three Volnay 1ers with its spicy and slightly more deeply pitched nose that features notes of plum, violet, red cherry and lavender. The refined, vibrant and beautifully intense middle weight flavors are like sucking on small pebbles before terminating in a more powerful yet balanced and solidly long finish. Like the Brouillards this is quite firmly structured and will need a few years first.
