The 2017 Vosne-Romanée La Colombière is also quite strongly marked by its time in new wood, though the wine has more substance to integrate it, offering up an appealing bouquet of French roast, plums, wild berries, dark chocolate and an attractive touch of peony. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, satiny and more complete, with juicy acids and creditable depth at the core, concluding with a saline finish. It's an appreciable step above the regular Vosne-Romanée Village this year.
Just above Clos du Château on clay soil. 65- to 95-year-old vines. Remontage not pigeage. ‘Infusion not extraction’, says Louis-Michel Liger-Belair. 'There’s no sunshine in the cellar so if the tannins are not ripe at harvest they never will be.'
Sweet red fruit with a touch of vanilla scent. Succulent, delicate, pure and on the palate the oak disappears. Glorious purity and finesse. So long. (JH)
