The 2015 Pommard 1er Cru les Pezerolles was matured in 80% new oak this year. That wood is handled well on the nose, allowing attractive scents of blackcurrant, redcurrant and iodine to filter through. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded and quite dense opening. This is a spicy number, a little chewiness on the mid-palate with a finish that needs to muster a touch more detail and refinement. I appreciate the sustain on the spicy finish, but I would just like to see more expression of this great vineyard in the wineglass.
Cask sample. Mid crimson. Finely fragrant with dusty dark-red fruit. That dustiness could be described as a stony, mineral quality but the fruit is very pure. Extremely refined texture and marked freshness, especially in this vintage. Surprisingly silky texture for such a young Pommard. I can see why this has sold out. There's a hint of new oak here but it seems more in the background than on the Arvelets. Lively and refined and seems that it will be approachable at quite a young age. (JH)
