The 1968 Sassicaia is by far the best wine of this last flight that covers the 1970s. Sassicaia was not produced in 1969. This phenomenal wine set the stage for what would become the most revolutionary bottle in Italy. It opens to a sure and determined sense of confidence and purpose. It is as if it knew it would make history. This vintage of Sassicaia shows a natural glow or luster that underlines its purity and finesse. The gorgeous bouquet reveals a level of energy and verve that absolutely defies its age. Dried fruit, crushed mineral, licorice and balsam herb add to the wine's remarkable length and polish. I'm sure it will continue to drink beautifully for many more years, but if I were lucky enough to own a bottle, I would keep it under lock and key regardless.
