This is, consequently, a rather unusual wine and the 1998 Brunello di Montalcino is no exception: a fresh ruby/garnet color is followed by a perfumed, intriguing nose of wild cherries, raspberries, light and subtle oak, wafting and fragrant, but lingering as well. The structure and concentration, as always, are medium level but the length, continuity, and focus are very good, the texture silky and fine-grained, and the sweetness of the fruit most agreeable. Not for muscle freaks, but there is a place for Brunello di Montalcino of this sort as well. Il Marroneto is just to the north of Montalcino in a coolish part of Montalcino (though this is always one of the hotter parts of Tuscany) and its soil has a high percentage of sand.

his is the best Brunello I have ever had from here. Very aromatic, with light raisin and spice, with hints of chocolate. Medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, delicious finish. Succulent and fine.
