The Antinori firm purchased this estate in July, 1995, and although 1995 is generally a superior vintage for Brunello than 1996, they feel their work in the vineyard and stricter selection in 1996 produced a better wine. Most 1996 Brunellos I have tasted are austere and tannic, although there are some gorgeous exceptions. This is certainly one of them. Pian delle Vigne's 1996 Brunello di Montalcino offers a complex bouquet of new saddle leather, spice box, soy, and earthy/plum/cherry fruit. Its deep ruby/garnet color is accompanied by a sweet attack as well as a ripe, medium-bodied,
Wonderfully aromatic with berries, cherries and raspberries. Medium-bodied, with vanilla, cherry and chocolate flavors and a medium finish. Needs more on the finish to be outstanding, but very good indeed.
The Pian delle Vignes's debut Brunello.
