BOW (8.25)

We tasted this wine in may 2023: what a surprise and what a perfect condition.
A wine of 50+ years old can go either way. Now we were pretty sure of our case as this bottle came from a very good cellar and has always been kept very well. And with the riserva speciale you have a slightly better chance that it won't collapse.

The bottle was carefully uncorked and opened with a nice 'plop'. What happened next was what you were hoping for. The wine had soaked into the cork up to two-thirds, a good sign, smelled spicy and had a strong scent of fruit and a hint of oak. Sniffing the bottle, the scent of sultanas came our way. This was so promising and augured well.

The colour was darker than usual, as expected from a riserva from 1967. We did have an inkling that this wine would contain a lot of tannin. The scents that now welcomed us were a party in themselves: notes of dried mint, a clove, but also mushroom, dark red fruit, sultanas, dark chocolate... what sensations!

The first sip was full of complexity, what a lot is happening here. Complex, slightly acidic yet soft, velvety, leaving a film on the tongue and your teeth, nice body, full but not too heavy. We gave the wine more time to catch its breath and it improved rapidly! The acids subsided, the Barolo became more concentrated, fruitier and it developed notes of blackberry and cherry jam, a rose vibe for adults.

If you want to enjoy this beautiful Barolo decant it at least half an hour beforehand. But then you will miss out on the great adventure.
