I have a particular weakness for Thiriet's 2019 Côte de Nuits-Villages Les Retraits, a beautiful wine that soars from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, spices, orange peel, burnt sage and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, lively and fine-boned, with melting tannins and a long, saline finish, it's already hard to resist.
Camille Thiriet has always loved Jérôme Galeyrand’s wine from this vineyard and so jumped at the chance to get the grapes, which she vinifies with all the stems. When first tasted at the winery shortly after bottling there was a faint astringence, but when revisited in November at the general Côte de Nuits-Villages tasting, the wine had blossomed. A little lighter in colour than Aux Montagnes but still a fine vivid purple. The gorgeous bouquet offers heavenly scented rose petals, gorgeous, with extra depth compared to other wines from leading producers tasted on the same day, and avoids any of the clammy sucrosity which can be a character of the 2019 vintage.
