From Rion?s 45-year old vines, the 2013 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Amoureuses has an understated bouquet at first, the fruits seeming to bide their time, but they gradually open to reveal mineral-rich, wild strawberry, Morello and citrus scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, filigree tannins and well-judged acidity that lend tension and race. This is not a flamboyant or ravishing Amoureuses, it is more about poise and a gradual build in intensity to its detailed finish. The kind of Amoureuses you want to know in the ?Tu? rather than ?Vous? form.
?As it often is, this is the most elegant of these 1ers with a well-layered and attractively fresh combination of spicy red and blue pinot fruit, plum, violet and wet stone nuances that are trimmed in hints of sandalwood and exotic tea. The seductively rich, intense and beautifully precise medium weight flavors terminate in a dusty, firm and marvelously persistent finish that evidences just a touch of austerity. This classy effort should age well yet be approachable after only 4 to 5 years of bottle age.
