Tasted at the Chambolle Amoureuses tasting in London, the 1989 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses was perhaps the biggest surprise of the vertical. The bouquet is modest at first, prefers not to make too much fuss. However, it blossoms over ten to 20 minutes, offering lovely red berry fruit mixed with nettle, chestnut and cold stone. There is a "coolness" to these aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and very tensile. Lively and poised while not shortchanging you on fruit, it gently unfolds to a really quite wondrous, almost crystalline finish. Even Véronique Drouhin herself seemed amazed how well this 1989 performed.
