Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Richebourg Grand Cru has a very expressive bouquet, complex with wild strawberry, red plum and clove aromas, beautifully defined and intense. The oak is seamlessly integrated here. The palate is very well balanced with smooth tannin, sensual and caressing with a long tail on the finish. Before its identity was revealed I thought it might be the Richebourg from Lamarche. Whatever -- it is a very impressive and utterly delicious, supremely well-made wine of which the domaine should be proud.

Rather dark and closed, and on the palate, this is big, powerful, but not especially beautiful. The layering and finesse you’d expect from a senior grand cru are not apparent at this stage. It’s good wine, for sure, but not magical, and hence not much of a step up from the village wines despite its greater mass. (AH)
