The 2014 Beaune 1er Cru les Boucherottes has one of the most subtle and reserved noses from A.F. Gros, though the 30% new oak here is deftly embroidered into the red fruit and the terroir already shows through. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, a keen thread of acidity and good structure. There is freshness and vitality here, a little austerity towards the finish but a very long, minerally aftertaste. This is excellent.
Just under Clos des Mouches (some goes into Bouchard’s Beaune du Château). 80% hail loss. Some belongs to the Hospices. 16 hours for eight people to sort 1 tonne. Therefore only 5-10% whole bunch, occasional pigeage at the end.
Lightish cherry red. Peppery red-fruit aroma. Firm but finely dry and textured. Relatively light but that dry (but not drying) texture adds persistence. Scented at the core though the texture leads the way at the moment. (JH)
