The 2002 exhibits a dark ruby color along with a sweet perfume of red and black currants, licorice, and dried herbs, medium body as well as good fruit, but a shorter finish and harder tannin than I remember from barrel. Like many 2002s, it is restrained, closed, and reluctant to reveal its full charms.Persuasive, expansive, full-bodied, and muscular, this enormously endowed, rich wine looks set for a long life, at least three decades. A terrific effort that rivals the compelling 1998.
Charming, with blood orange, damson plum and cherry notes melded together, lined with hints of juniper and mint, and carrying through an elegant, silky finish. A little shy on stuffing, but this has lovely balance and persistent length. An admirable effort in a very difficult year. Derenoncourt notes that the winery could not have made a wine this good in a comparably challenging vintage 10 or 15 years earlier, when temperature control was being done "by hand" on the vats, by putting ice on top of the tanks.
Rene Gabriel rates this wine 18/20 points.
