Pape-Clement produced a charming, forward, medium-bodied wine in 1989, but it suffers in comparison with their exquisite 1988 and 1986. For the record, the 1989 was made from grapes harvested between September 11th and 26th. Production was higher than in 1986 or 1988, no doubt contributing to the lighter style. It is a wine with plenty of charm, good color, medium body, soft tannins, and an alluring weedy, mineral-laced, blackcurrant fruitiness. I suspect many readers, no doubt because of the wine's undeniable charm, would rate it higher.
Elegant and well made. Color is medium-dark ruby. Aromas of dried cherries and licorice. Full-bodied and well structured, with compacted velvety tannins and a long aftertaste of chocolate and fruit and hints of earth.
