Friedrich Keller's 2018 Eichberg Spätburgunder GG is an amazing cru from the Kaiserstuhl and remains one of my Baden favorites. It comes from horizontally terraced vineyards on dark volcanic soils, and the bouquet is pure, deep, coolish and even flinty but also fine, ripe and concentrated, just perfectly precise. On the palate, this is a bright, fresh, mineral, very pure and salty, silky-textured and nervy but tensioned and thrilling Pinot with fine but firm tannins and ripe, concentrated and juicy fruit. The finish is very long, fresh and aromatic as well as stimulatingly salty. This is an impressively fresh and finessed Eichberg, which used to have more power than finesse in the old days.
Deep and dark with a complex interplay of bitter chocolate, smoke and lemon-zest freshness, this is a stunningly concentrated and vibrant pinot noir that lifts you off your feet at the simultaneously "sweet" and mineral finish.
