The 2020 Guru is a field blend from old vines (60 years), mostly Viosinho, Rabigato, Códega do Larinho and Gouveio, aged for eight months in 91% used French oak. It comes in very dry and at 12.4% alcohol. This is another fine year for what has become one of Douro's finest whites. I don't think it is equal to the 2019, the last reviewed, but it is also quite unevolved and capable of significant improvement. It is very elegant in terms of mid-palate finesse and very dry in terms of its fruit profile. It always seems fresh and lively, not anything like an oaky and fat white. The key calling card here, though, is the structure. Powerful on the finish, this simply grips the palate and won't let go. The fruit always holds its own. This is going to need a couple of years to show everything it has—not that it is so bad to drink today—but it certainly looks like another splendid offering in this brand.
Full bottle 1,506 g. A 59-year-old vineyard in Cima Corgo at 600 m planted with Viosinho, Rabigato, Códega do Larinho and Gouveio. Fermented cool in barrel over 4 weeks, only 9% new oak. Aged 8 months with lees stirring. TA 5 g/l, pH 3.34.
Stony first impression, with the fruit opening up slowly. On the palate, creamy, firm, bone dry and the merest hint of the mealy character of oak – so subtle, if slightly more present on the day after opening. This is a really precise wine, elegant, finely balanced between flavour and texture and with great length. Such finesse that you might overlook its intensity, which is felt more in length than depth. But it has depth. Subtle, pure, mouth-watering and likely to age well. A great example of less is more in terms of the oak. I'd be inclined to wait another year before drinking this – for the added complexity – though you could of course drink it now with great pleasure. (JH)
