Candied grapefruit rind, salted caramel, and quince preserves in the nose of Zind-Humbrecht’s 2008 Gewurztraminer Hengst Selection de Grains Nobles set the stage for a creamy palate loaded with salted caramel, marmalade, and quince jelly. At 11.9% alcohol, this displays a wafting sense of elegance, with ethereal, high-toned suggestions of pit fruit essences as well as an uncanny stream of fresh citrus carrying into a long, honeyed, exhilarating finish. This transcends – or should I say “sublimates”? – the varietal character of its cepage. It ought to be fascinating to follow for 30 or more years.
Lovely and expressive, with lots of Gewürztraminer's lychee, orange blossom, cream and honeysuckle flavors. Zesty acidity runs through this, and this vibrant framework really allows the purity of flavor to shine. The long finish is infused with rose petal.
