In 1995, Schoffit produced a bevy of late harvest Vendange Tardive-styled wines that are extremely powerful and intense. Although they possess considerable levels of residual sugar, much of their sweetness is concealed behind the tangy acidity these late harvest wines contain. The 1995 Tokay-Pinot Gris Cuvee Alexandre Vieilles Vignes needs another 3-4 years of cellaring. The wine's moderately intense nose only hints at the waxy, buttery, spicy, honeyed richness that will emerge with additional bottle age. Phenomenally dense, high extract, full-bodied flavors coat the palate with a viscously-textured richness. Fortunately, all of this is buttressed by good acidity. Although the wine possesses 4 grams per liter of residual sugar, most tasters will consider it dry. It should keep for 20-25 years. Schoffit might be considered a protege of Leonard and Olivier Humbrecht as the wines produced at this exceptional domaine share a similar style - very ripe, concentrated, powerful, and intense!
