Representing as usual a selection from across his top sites, Keller's 2011 Riesling trocken Von der Fels delivers pronounced citrus rind and pip piquancy, along with notes of pumpkin or winter squash with their seeds and myriad - alkaline, stony, saline - suggestions of things mineral. A tad lower in alcohol than the corresponding Gutsriesling, it manages a similar trick of projecting substantiality at the same time as levity and vivacity. This impressively persistent cuvee is likely to gain an edge on that generic if permitted a few years in bottle, even though today it's marginally less infectiously juicy.
2011 was another warm year which encouraged the development of botrytis in the autumn. This was more of a problem for the GGs, the grapes for which were picked later than those for the estate wines. It may sound like heresy, but some estate wines rivalled or even surpassed their GG siblings because of healthier grapes with more refreshing acidity.
Quite reserved on the nose, but also very intriguing with gentle citrus notes and a spicy piquancy. Taut and racy on the palate with invigorating acidity and a zesty lemony flavour. A fine mineral note adds complexity to the finish. (MS)
