The Staglin winery has no age-old history. The Staglin Family Vineyard was founded only in 1985 in Rutherford, Napa County. Yet, the vineyard is more than a hundred years old. The first vines were planted in the 1960s. Despite the fact that the winery itself has only existed for less than 50 years, it has already managed to position itself in the top.
The estate is located on the western slope of Mount St. John, the highest mountain in the Mayacamas Range. By now, twenty hectares of vines are in use. The soil is alluvial and has volcanic influences. This ensures wines with a very particular character. Staglin's vineyards are certified organic.
In 2002, the construction of the 7,000 square meter underground wine cellar was completed. This cellar makes it possible to produce high-quality, terroir-driven wines. Because the cellar naturally has a constant temperature, less electricity is used, and no evaporation of the wine takes place. This is in line with the biological method.
The winery's portfolio consists of eight wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sangiovese, or a Bordeaux blend. The vinification is led by winemaker Frederik Johansson. Every year, he aims to produce the wines in such a way that they express the terroir as much as possible. This results in pure and elegant wines. Each cuvée is aged in French oak. The duration and the proportion of new wood varies per cuvée.
Staglin is also committed to charity projects. “Great wines for good causes” is an important motto for the wine company. Since Staglin's inception, they have donated more than $1 billion to various aid organisations. The main charity they collaborate with is the Music Festival for Brain Health. This event takes place on the estate of the Staglin family.
In this way, the family is able to achieve success not only in the wine industry, but also in the sphere of health research.
