The 2013 VV'47 is a field blend from old vines (the "VV'47" references Vinhas Velhas (old vines) and the 1947 origin of the vineyard). This is another of the winery's single-parcel wines this issue, this one is from the top of the quinta, "the oldest vertical vineyard planted in the Douro," they say. Aged for 12 months in used French oak and coming in at 14.5% alcohol, this picks up where the 2012 left off—nicely structured, a little compact and not especially expressive. It has the same beautiful finesse, though. It is a perfect food wine but perhaps a bit pricey for what it is. It is readily drinkable right now, but it should continue to age well for at least another decade, maybe more.
With traditional foot treading in open lagars, this field blend has a generously rich and open character. Its tannins are firm but ripe—a powerhouse of spice, black fruits and structure from wood aging. It's an impressive wine that can be enjoyed now or until 2025.
