The fruit for this 2018 Shiraz Old Vine is from two vineyards: one 48 years old at the time of harvest, and one 68 years old at the time of harvest. It was matured for 18 months in French oak (35% new). This is concentrated, silky and rippling with flavor. The 2018 vintage is worn so well here: it is vitally fresh, red-fruited and spicy, with a skein of fine, well-judged acidity through the finish. This is one of those lovely intersects between delicious and age-worthy, the former ensuring much of it will not live to see its 10th birthday.
This has impressive composure and a sense of tension that delivers plenty of blackberries and red plums in contained but intense mode. The tannin texture is fine and groomed and dialed in nicely. There’s finesse and complexity, as well as more sophisticated, savory style here. From 1961 plantings.
