Some classic sherried Speysider that everyone should have tried.
Colour: gold.
Nose: not that different from the 10, just cake-ier, more sherried, and rather more complex, with small herbs, a mossy side, and a large chocolate cake. Touches of yeasty porridge in the background. Fresh pumpernickel bread.
Mouth: really very cake-y, malty, with raisins and some very lovely touches of spearmint. I’m also finding a delicate wood smoke, as well as the usual walnuts when we’re having a sherried malt such as this one. Goody good.
Finish: rather long, and shall I dare mention Christmas cakes? And yet it’s not heavy.
Nose: nice, quite an enticing nose. It’s got a brightness to it (orange juice, fresh ginger, something heathery), then more butterscotch, red apples and raisins. Yellow plums. Subtle vanilla cake and cinnamon. Nice, and no traces of sulphur that seem to be mentioned in a few other reviews. Mouth: very malty now, on oranges and stewed fruits with a remarkable minty side. Mild baking spices, good sherry sweetness (raisins). Walnuts. Light hints of fruit candy. A bit of caramel too. Finish: medium, still on oranges and spices. A hint of mocha too.
A good all-rounder, offering more depth than a bourbon-matured whisky of this age, but certainly not a sherry bomb either. Value for money.
