Colour: dark straw.

Nose: ah, this is something completely different. Sweeter and much rubberier right at the start, with some typical notes of tyres, tar, pepper… Some fruity notes emerge, like apple, green pear, green plum. Yet, it’s finally even more austere than the Ardbeg, and perhaps a little less satisfying.
It then gets quite vegetal (wet fern, moss) and even a little mineral (wet chalk). A great one, perhaps just slightly less stunning than the new Ardbeg.

Mouth: again, it’s crispier and fruitier at the same time, but still very austere. More tar, more rubber, and much, much more pepper. Some sweetness but it comes from the alcohol. It then grows more and more powerful and drier… What a body! The pepper grows even stronger after a few minutes… And the sweetness vanishes, leaving just a mixture of smoke, pepper and lemon zest that might displease the lovers of round and smooth whiskies – but not the peat heads, obviously.

The finish is very long but again, very austere. Decidedly!

Port Ellen's 1st Release, a whisky that embodies the essence of time, craftsmanship, and the rich heritage of Islay, stands as a testament to the artistry of the distillers at Port Ellen. This exceptional expression was distilled in 1979 and bottled in 2001, making it a 22-year-old single malt whisky. Released as part of Diageo's Special Releases in 2001, this offering quickly gained legendary status among whisky enthusiasts and collectors.

The Port Ellen Distillery, situated on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay in Scotland, has a storied history that dates back to its establishment in 1825. While the distillery ceased production in 1983, its legacy lives on through the exceptional whiskies it produced during its operational years, especially through limited releases like the 1st Release.

One of the defining characteristics of the Port Ellen 1st Release is its robust alcohol content, clocking in at an impressive 56.2%. This higher proof not only adds intensity to the flavor profile but also reflects the distillery's commitment to producing bold and memorable whiskies. The 22 years spent maturing in oak casks have imparted a complexity and depth to the spirit, creating a symphony of flavors that captivate the senses.

The nose of this whisky is a harmonious blend of maritime influences and peat smoke. Notes of brine, seaweed, and coastal air intermingle with the distinctive aroma of peat, creating an olfactory experience that transports the drinker to the rugged shores of Islay. The palate continues the journey with a rich and smoky character, accompanied by hints of citrus, vanilla, and a subtle sweetness that balances the boldness of the peat. The interplay of flavors is a testament to the skillful cask selection and meticulous maturation process.

The finish is a lingering crescendo of warmth and complexity. As the last drop is savored, one is left with a profound appreciation for the craftsmanship that went into creating this extraordinary expression. The Port Ellen 1st Release, with its limited availability and iconic status, has become a prized collector's item, often fetching high prices at auctions and gaining a reputation as a must-have for serious whisky connoisseurs.

Diageo's Special Releases are known for showcasing the best of the company's extensive whisky portfolio, and the inclusion of Port Ellen 1st Release in the 2001 edition is a testament to the exceptional quality of this Islay gem. As whisky enthusiasts continue to explore and appreciate the world of single malts, the legend of Port Ellen and its 1st Release will undoubtedly endure, leaving an indelible mark on the tapestry of Scotch whisky history.
