Colour;: straw. Nose: this one is much rawer, smoky, meaty and grassy, with notes of mustard seeds, ham, wet chalk… Truly wild. Not pungent despite the high alcohol but let’s try it with water (at roughly 45%): we have more wax now, fir honey, vanilla pods, pollen… Water really worked, this one is an excellent swimmer but it’s not quite as complex as the 1969. Hints of wet dog. Mouth (neat): punchy and much fruitier, on canned pineapples, oranges and a slight waxiness. Lots of alcohol of course that quite masks the whole. So, with water: even sweeter but also spicier, with more tannins but also quite some salt and those mustardy notes. Long, peppery and spicy finish, with less sweetness but a little resin now… The whole is quite ‘natural’, a good example of most Rare Malts’ style.

History:
Millburn distillery, originally known as "Inverness Distillery," was founded in 1807 by Mr. Welsh, predating the legalization of whisky distillation by the Excise Act of 1823. Over the years, the distillery changed hands multiple times, with notable owners including James Rose, Alexander MacDonald, and Andrew Haig & Co. In 1904, it officially adopted the name "Millburn" under the Millburn Distillery Company.
The distillery's resilience was tested in 1922 when a fire caused significant damage. However, the dedicated owners successfully rebuilt and restored operations, ensuring the continuation of Millburn's esteemed whisky production. The subsequent acquisition by Booth's Distillers Ltd. and its integration into the Distillers Company Ltd. family further solidified Millburn's place in the whisky industry.
Despite its storied history, Millburn distillery sadly closed its doors in 1985. In the years that followed, many of its buildings were demolished, making way for redevelopment. However, a tangible piece of the distillery's legacy remained as Whitbread opened "The Auld Distillery," a Beefeater restaurant, and a Travel Inn hotel on the site, preserving a connection to Millburn's past.
The Millburn 25 Years Old Rare Malts Selection, bottled in 2001 as part of the renowned Rare Malts Selection series, pays homage to the distillery's heritage. With its remarkable age and exquisite flavor profile, this expression offers whisky enthusiasts an opportunity to experience the craftsmanship and artistry that defined Millburn's whiskies.
