Hazelburn 15 Years Old Oloroso Cask Matured 2023

The world of whisky enthusiasts is often captivated by the marriage of exceptional craftsmanship and unique maturation processes. The release of Hazelburn 15 Years Old Oloroso Cask Matured in 2023 exemplifies the artistry of Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown. Bottled at a robust 55.8%, this expression, distilled in June 2008 and matured on Oloroso Sherry casks, promises a sensory journey that marries the distinctive character of Hazelburn with the rich influence of Oloroso Sherry.

Nose:

Upon first nosing, the Hazelburn 15 reveals a tapestry of aromas that beckon the senses. The Oloroso Sherry cask imparts an array of dried fruits, with raisins and figs taking center stage. Subtle hints of walnut and dark chocolate add depth, creating an olfactory experience that is both indulgent and inviting. The marriage of Hazelburn's triple distillation and Oloroso Sherry maturation promises a complex and intriguing nose.

Palate:

As the first sip graces the palate, the Hazelburn 15 Years Old Oloroso Cask Matured unfolds with a symphony of flavors. The triple-distilled malt, characteristic of Hazelburn, provides a delicate and smooth foundation. The Oloroso Sherry cask, however, takes the lead, offering a luscious combination of dark fruits, including plums and dates. The interplay of sweet and savory notes dances on the taste buds, with a subtle undercurrent of oak and spice adding to the complexity.

Finish:

The journey culminates in a finish that lingers, leaving a lasting impression of the Oloroso Sherry influence. A gentle warmth, accompanied by notes of dried fruits and a hint of nuttiness, graces the palate. The finish is a testament to the meticulous maturation process, with the Oloroso Sherry cask imparting a velvety smoothness that lingers in the memory.

Conclusion:

Hazelburn 15 Years Old Oloroso Cask Matured stands as a testament to the artful marriage of traditional distillation methods and the influence of Oloroso Sherry casks. This 2023 release captures the essence of time, with the whisky maturing gracefully on Oloroso Sherry casks since its distillation in June 2008. Priced not just in currency but in the richness of its flavors, this expression invites enthusiasts to embark on a sensory journey where the mastery of Hazelburn meets the opulence of Oloroso Sherry. As the bottle is uncorked, it reveals a symphony of elegance that unfolds with each sip, making it a must-have for collectors and connoisseurs alike.

Words of Whisky (86)

Nose: Red fruits, a hint of blackcurrants and a fair amount of milk chocolate. There’s leather, as well as raisins, menthol and strawberries. Probably figs and dates too. Good but intense sherry influence. Admittedly, there’s not much about this that says Campbeltown to me.
Taste: This is more like it. More recognisable now. A syrupy texture. Leather, tobacco and just a tinge of smoke and char. Also plums, mocha, a pinch of pepper and fennel. Not much red fruits, but more oak and a slight dryness.
Finish: Medium length. Notes of espresso beans, rum-soaked raisins and charred oak.

CONCLUSION
It's good, but doesn't work entirely either. The Hazelburn 2008 15 Years Oloroso Cask Matured showcases the cask influence to a degree that is detrimental to the spirit character. That's no issue if you're a lover of sherry-matured whisky, but might be problematic if you're hoping for that Campbeltown experience.

Whisky Notes (89)

We’ve tried a few really tasty Hazelburn Oloroso Cask expressions in the past (2020 and 2018 release), so I’m keen to try the latest release. The unpeated, triple distilled Springbank style often works well with a full maturation in sherry casks.

Nose: very elegant, with hints of sweet sherry brandy rather than actual Oloroso perhaps. Nice red berries, blackcurrants and plums, with raisins, hints of tobacco leaves and walnuts. Then mocha, buttery notes and dark chocolate. Hints of old attics and cellars as well. Some fleshy umami in the background but perfectly tolerable for me. Really captivating.

Mouth: lovely combination of old leathery notes and berry sweetness, dried figs and chocolate. Nice acidity as well, think blood orange and flashes of tangerine. Dried apricots with caramel coated hazelnuts. Tobacco, wood char, hints of candied ginger and mild black pepper. Then back to earthy notes and cola sweets.

Finish: quite long, with a hint of diesel, wood polish, liquorice and coffee beans.

The balance of (rather restrained) Campbeltown funk and a very nice sherry influence is great. Fresh, fruity sherry, right up my alley.
