Zuccardi • Aluvional Los Chacayes - 2017
The Aluvional range is the "paraje," or lieu-dit, range, and the 2017 Aluvional Los Chacayes comes from the alluvial cone in the south of the appellation, where there is a little more soil, while in the north there are more stones, as you can see in The Vines of Mendoza. These soils provide for more balanced wines, while the wines from the north can be riper. This is 14.3% alcohol but still feels austere, and there's no room for sweetness. There are flowers and aromatic herbs and subtle freshness; there is texture but no concentration; and it's medium-bodied with finesse and fruit-forward tannins. It fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter oak barrels and concrete. 5,000 bottles were filled in August 2018.
Catena Zapata • Nicolas Catena - 2016
This a rich and flavorful red, showing blackcurrants and tobacco. Full-bodied, soft and fruity with bright and spicy, oyster-shell and fresh-herb character. Serious cabernet blend.
