James Suckling (96)

Fantastic aromas of blueberry, blackberry, violets, black licorice and stones. Full-bodied, firm, silky, and fresh. Very long and balanced. Beautiful tannins. All in harmony.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is just as monumental as it has always been. A big, vertical wine, the 2013 exudes concentration, depth and vertical intensity-from the very first taste. Swaths of tannin wrap around a core of dark fruit in this brooding Cabernet Sauvignon. Licorice, coffee and leather overtones add the closing shades of nuance. Explosive and riveting, the 2013 remains one of the finest wines ever made here.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, like many 2013s, is still dense, concentrated, and powerful, with an almost gangly style that needs another 5-7 years of bottle age (I wouldn’t turn down a bottle today). Lots of ripe black fruits, cassis, chocolate, and graphite as well as a hint of mint define the nose, and it’s full-bodied, with a stacked mid-palate, building yet sweet tannins, and a great finish. It’s loaded with potential but needs bottle age.

Hot, dry vintage with small berries. They have to irrigate after veraison in the dry May to October period. Longer, deeper irrigation to encourage roots to delve deep to find water.
Deep glowing crimson. Pretty dry on the end – very youthful. Wait until there’s a bit more tertiary character? No heat at all on the end.

Yields continued to increase in 2013, with just over 4,000 cases of wine from a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. This is another killer effort from Spottswoode. Inky bluish purple to the rim, it has hints of violets intermixed with sweet foresty notes, blackcurrants, chocolate and a touch of subtle smoke and earth. It is dense, with higher acidity and more noticeable structure than the 2012, but is as concentrated, dense and promising. Some patience is warranted in 2013, and I would suggest waiting another 5-6 years before pulling the cork on one. It is a 50-year wine at the very minimum and a great classic.
