The “Vinha da Ponte” is a field blend from a vineyard first planted in 1914 by the current owners’ grandfather. It has become one of Portugal’s priciest, best and most famous wines at this juncture. The 2000 “Vinha da Ponte” is elegantly crafted. It shows lovely, sweet fruit in the mid-palate with a touch of licorice on the end. It is maturing well, and seems quite approachable now, although there is still a tannic kick on the finish. As this airs out, the fruit gets sweeter and becomes ever more attractive for awhile, then goes a little dumb again. It really showed best the next day. It has a certain “sweet ‘n sour” nuance. This is nice, intense, round, sweet and full, but I think later bottlings are even better, and this was probably my least favorite of the luxury vineyard blends, though still good. There were 225 cases made

Full-bore, decadent red, with a smoky, spicy aroma and layers of rich blackberry, dark plum, cassis and meaty flavors that jump out of the glass at you. Concentrated notes of tar, dark chocolate and roasted meats dominate the finish; lush tannins complete the package. Tempting now.
