Robert Parker (100)

Perhaps the greatest kept secret in all of Bordeaux is how spectacular the 1950 vintage was in Pomerol. The 1950 Lafleur could easily pass for a 1947 or 1945 wine given its extraordinary level of concentration. The color remains black/purple, and the bouquet offers aromas of cedar, spices, and black fruits. The wine is unbelievably concentrated, massively full and rich, with sweet tannin in the finish.

10: Dunkles Braun mit orangen Reflexen. Eigenwillige Nase, Boal-Madeiraduft, ziemlich süss, viel Feigensirup, sehr eigenwillig, fast schon etwas Kräuterliköriges drin zeigend. (19/20). Die besten: 20/20

Vinous (100)

The 1950 Lafleur has an audacious, life-affirming and vivacious bouquet with astonishing detail and clarity. Unlike the 1949 the 1950 simply soars from the glass, which I once likened to a prisoner tasting freedom for the first time after decades of incarceration. The palate is medium-bodied with a sorbet-like freshness, satin-like in texture with wonderful poise, curiously reminiscent of a coeval Penfolds's Grange that Max Schubert was making at the time. Positively shimmering in its dotage, this ranks as one of the finest Lafleurs that I have ever tasted, perhaps even one of the finest wines that I have ever tasted. Tasted at the “Business and Wine” Lafleur dinner at Ten Trinity.
